Found this on the recent boot of Pyramid on a Soekris 4526-30:

This should be fixed in trunk. Basically init-functions file for LSB style init scripts redirects output to /dev/null when executing usplash tests (checking for pretty boot up screen). The devfs has not been mounted at this point so /dev/null does not exist. I commented out the usplash checks since they are pointles for Pyramid. At somepoint they should be ripped out once we know it didnt bork anything.

On another note we could create the null device in the grub-setup script where we create the initial hda hda1 console and tty devices so it will exist until devfs is mounted.
